Six years ago, on 15 June 2019, six young women staged a peaceful and silent demonstration during the EU Summit meetings held in Valletta. The group held a banner reading: ‘Welcome to Malta, where women are incubators.”![]()

While the protest was entirely non-violent, it drew a range of reactions from the public. Among the many derogatory comments, two stood out as particularly violent, aggressive and inciting violence against the protestors. Both comments were posted by men in their twenties.![]()

Concerned for their safety, the six women, the youngest of whom was just 18 at the time, filed a police report. Following an investigation, the police found sufficient grounds to charge both men with hate speech.![]()

Over the last six years, supported by their lawyer, Lara Dimitrijevic, the women have attended multiple court hearings while awaiting their turn to testify. One of the accused admitted guilt and issued a public apology. The second repeatedly defied court orders and only appeared in court today, escorted by the police.![]()

This individual was given 6 months effective prison suspended for 2 years and a personal guarantee was issued in favour of the activists as protection.![]()

Reflecting on the verdict, two of the women shared their experience:![]()

“What struck me most in court was that this man excused his violent remarks by claiming he had watched videos depicting abortion as the ‘ripping of a foetus to shreds.’ That is why he said we should be ‘ripped to shreds.’ These scientifically inaccurate materials, such as ‘The Silent Scream’ mislead people into making violent statements. This is not how abortion happens, but misinformation in our schools fuels hostility.”![]()

“After six years, justice has been served. I hope this can serve as a reminder that actions do indeed have consequences, and that sending people graphic death threats on the internet is not normal at all. This is a victory for us, for the pro-choice cause that is so used to normalised vitriol, and a reminder that we have come so far since that pro-choice stunt in 2019, and that we have a long way to go.” ![]()

Voice for Choice Coalition welcomes today’s outcome. We reiterate that there is no place for intimidation, aggression or hate speech against activists exercising their right to peaceful protest. Hate speech has no place in our society, and those who engage in it face serious criminal consequences.![]()

The so-called “planning reform” being rushed through Parliament threatens not only our environment, but also our quality of life, our rights to fair participation, and the democratic safeguards that protect the common good from the interests of powerful developers.![]()

As humanists, we believe that decisions about our shared future must be guided by evidence, fairness, and respect for people and planet — not short-term profit. These reforms would dismantle safeguards, weaken public appeals, and normalise illegalities.![]()

We therefore join our voices to the call:![]()
1️⃣ Immediate withdrawal of the draft bills and legal notices.![]()
2️⃣ Suspension of works on contested developments while appeals are ongoing.![]()
3️⃣ A genuine, open consultation through a White Paper on planning reforms Malta truly needs.![]()
