This is a significant moment. Across Europe, and beyond, the momentum is clear: end-of-life choice is increasingly understood as a matter of autonomy, compassion, dignity, and human rights. 🌍![]()

Voluntary Assisted Euthanasia is not about treating life lightly. It recognises that, in the most difficult circumstances, individuals should be trusted to make informed decisions about their own suffering, their own body, and their own final chapter.![]()

It is not about abandoning care. It is about expanding it. The best possible palliative care must always be available, strengthened, and supported. But for some, even the best care cannot remove physical or psychological suffering they personally find intolerable. In those cases, a humane society should not disregard their wishes, but treat them with empathy and respect — and with careful safeguards to protect the vulnerable. 🤝![]()

After years of delay, the Government is now moving the National Commission for Human Rights and Equality Bill through Parliament at considerable speed.![]()

There is much to welcome. The Bill strengthens protections against discrimination and recognises “religion or belief” as a protected characteristic. Equality must belong to everyone, including believers, non-believers, doubters and those still searching.![]()

However, if Malta is to build a genuinely fair and mature society, the details matter. Humanists Malta has two initial concerns:![]()

1️⃣ “Belief” must explicitly include non-belief![]()
![]()
In Malta, the word “belief” is often understood primarily as religious belief. Freedom of conscience, however, belongs to everyone. The law should explicitly protect people with non-religious beliefs, as well as those who hold no religious belief, so that nobody is treated differently because of their worldview.![]()

2️⃣ Religious autonomy needs clear boundaries![]()

Religious communities should remain free to manage genuinely internal and doctrinal matters. However, many religious institutions also operate schools, care facilities and other services that employ staff and serve the wider public. The law must clearly establish where religious autonomy ends and equality and employment protections begin.![]()

Our aim is not to diminish the place of religion in society. It is to ensure that the law treats religious and non-religious people fairly and protects every person’s freedom of conscience.![]()
