Humanists Malta is in Berlin this week for the *European Humanist Services Network (EHSN) Working Seminar*, taking place on 16 and 17 September at the Humanistische Hochschule Berlin. humanistservices.eu/Our Chairperson is representing Humanists Malta alongside humanist organisations from across Europe, sharing experiences, learning from one another and exploring how we can strengthen the services and impact of our organisations.For Humanists Malta, a key focus during this seminar is *fundraising and organisational sustainability*. The programme includes dedicated discussions on joint fundraising, EU funding opportunities, peer-to-peer support and potential projects for continued cooperation across the European humanist network.As a growing, volunteer-led organisation, developing this area will help us build greater capacity, support new initiatives and make our work more sustainable over the long term.The seminar also brings together participants working on humanist ceremonies, youth engagement and existential care, alongside workshops on storytelling and wider discussions about the role of humanism in society.We look forward to sharing more of what we learn, and bringing new ideas and opportunities for collaboration back to Malta.#HumanistsMalta #humanism #ehsn #europeanhumanists #civilsociety #fundraising #CapacityBuilding #humanrights #Malta #berlin

🗳️ Democracy DayIn a time of growing uncertainty, and with authoritarian tendencies re-emerging in different parts of the world, the question of engagement becomes ever more pressing.Democracy is sustained not only by institutions, but by people who choose to take part in shaping the world around them.Bertolt Brecht reminded us that indifference is never neutral — that when we turn away, the consequences do not disappear, they accumulate. The conditions we live under are shaped by what we challenge, and what we allow to pass unexamined.At its core, this reflects a humanist insight: that the world we inhabit is shaped by human action, responsibility, and shared effort.There is no other world to defer to. A healthy democracy is not measured by how generously power is exercised. It is measured by how little people need to depend on power's goodwill in the first place.
🌿 Comino is not simply a beautiful place. It is part of our shared natural heritage, and decisions affecting it deserve the highest level of scrutiny.The decision by the Environment and Resources Authority to approve extensive tree interventions and preparatory works connected with the proposed Comino development has understandably raised serious environmental and governance concerns, particularly while the development itself remains subject to legal challenge.We welcome the work of Moviment Graffitti and other environmental organisations seeking to scrutinise these decisions and protect Comino through lawful civic action. Moviment Graffitti has now launched an appeal against the ERA permit and a wider campaign to defend the island.For humanists, care for the natural world is inseparable from care for human wellbeing. Healthy ecosystems, biodiversity and access to our shared natural heritage matter, but so do transparent institutions, evidence-based decision-making and public authorities acting in the public interest.Development decisions can have consequences lasting generations. They should therefore be approached with caution, openness and genuine respect for the environmental value of places such as Comino.Protecting our natural heritage is a matter of responsibility to one another, to future generations and to the living world we share. 🌍Moviment Graffitti is crowdfunding its appeal against the ERA permit and further action to defend Comino. 📰 Malta’s attitudes on abortion are changing — but remain deeply ambivalent.A new MaltaToday survey suggests growing support for removing prison sentences for women who have abortions. This is an important shift: punishment, fear, and stigma have no place in healthcare.But the same survey also shows continued support for prison sentences against doctors who provide abortion care. This contradiction matters.A humane society should not force women into fear while threatening medical professionals for offering care, information, and support.
