🏳️🌈 **IDAHOBIT — 17 May** 🏳️⚧️![]()
As humanists, we affirm the inherent dignity and worth of every human being. No one’s freedom, safety, or humanity should depend on who they love or how they understand themselves.![]()
IDAHOBIT is not only about remembering past progress — it is about recognising our shared responsibility, here and everywhere, to challenge prejudice, reject pseudoscience, and stand firmly for reason, compassion, and human rights. 🌍✨![]()
A humanist approach calls on us to listen to lived experiences, to be guided by evidence, and to place empathy at the centre of our societies. Equality is not a special privilege — it is a moral baseline. ⚖️![]()
Today, we stand in solidarity with LGBTQ+ people worldwide and reaffirm our commitment to a world where everyone can live openly, safely, and without fear. 🫶![]()
✊🏽 The work continues.![]()

🗳️ A referendum on voluntary assisted euthanasia would give the Maltese public the opportunity to engage directly with one of the most profound and personal ethical issues of our time.![]()
At Humanists Malta, we believe these conversations should be approached with empathy, dignity, and respect for differing views. Discussions on end-of-life choice are not simply political debates — they are deeply human questions involving suffering, autonomy, compassion, and personal dignity. 🤝![]()
For some people facing terminal illness and unbearable suffering, having the option of voluntary assisted euthanasia can offer peace of mind, comfort, and a sense of control during the final stages of life. No person should be forced to endure unnecessary suffering against their wishes when safeguards, informed consent, and strict medical oversight are in place. 🕊️![]()
We support open, evidence-based dialogue that allows people to make informed decisions while listening respectfully to the experiences and perspectives of others. A compassionate society should not turn away from difficult conversations, but approach them with humanity, care, and respect for individual choice. 💬![]()
Whatever one’s position, meaningful public participation and informed discussion are essential if Malta is to navigate this issue responsibly and respectfully. 🇲🇹![]()

“We carried out a broad consultation on voluntary assisted euthanasia and we introduced the concept of a medical will into the law,” the party stated today, on the day it released its promised electoral manifesto. “The people participated in large numbers and expressed different opinions on this issue.”![]()
PL went on to state it believes the discussion on this delicate subject should continue, asserting its view that the people “should be given the opportunity to express their opinion through a referendum”.![]()
Voluntary Assisted Euthanasia, or VAE, is one done at the explicit request of a mentally competent patient who is usually suffering from a terminal illness and experiencing unbearable suffering. Beyond consent, the inclusion of a medical professional who directly administers the life-ending medication is also a vital part of VAE.![]()
An option reserved for some very divisive topics, referendums have been held only seven times in Malta’s history. Most recently 11 years ago back in 2015, the country voted on the repealing of a spring hunting season for turtle doves and quail. Before that, 2011 saw a referendum on the introduction of divorce, while in 2003, a referendum was held on whether Malta should join the European Union.![]()
Do you think Malta should hold a referendum on voluntary assisted euthanasia?
🌈 Malta’s loss of its long-held top position on ILGA-Europe’s LGBTIQ+ rights index should not be seen simply as a question of rankings, but as a reminder of an important reality: legal progress alone does not automatically transform social attitudes.![]()
Over the past decade, Malta has made major legislative advances in the field of LGBTIQ+ rights and equality. Yet challenges remain. As Malta’s own Human Rights Directorate acknowledged in 2024, “societal attitudes still present barriers to full equality.”![]()
Recent data reflects this clearly. While many people in Malta express comfort with lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals, acceptance drops significantly when it comes to transgender persons, and a substantial number of respondents still believe LGBTIQ+ individuals should not enjoy equal rights.![]()
A humane and inclusive society requires more than progressive laws on paper. It also depends on education, empathy, open dialogue, and the continued willingness to challenge prejudice where it persists.![]()
Progress matters — but so does the culture that surrounds it. 🤝![]()

James Debono’s recent article in MaltaToday hits the nail on the head: while election campaigns focus on “putting more money in people’s pockets”, fundamental issues risk being pushed aside. 🤐![]()
Debono rightly warns that civil liberties have faded into the background. When society stops pushing boundaries, the pendulum can slowly start swinging backwards.![]()
We couldn’t agree more. As Humanists Malta stated in our response to Malta Vision 2050:![]()
“Quality of life is not purely about economic progress. To improve that for all, Malta should actively adhere to the modern values of non-discrimination, equality, and integration… [this] could be the plan to help Maltese society move forward into a mature, less conflicted, more rational and fair society.”![]()
It’s time for a mature and rational debate on an economic model that truly serves people, not just numbers.![]()
Let’s strive for a fairer Malta. 🇲🇹✨![]()

🌹 On a day like today — May Day — a day to reflect on work, dignity, and the kind of society we want to build, Erich Fromm’s words remain deeply relevant.![]()
In a world that often pushes people toward isolation, pressure, and competition, Erich Fromm reminds us of something profoundly simple: a healthy society is one where every person is able to grow, create, connect, and live with dignity.![]()
Humanism calls us to build that kind of world — where people are valued not for their utility, but for their humanity. Where compassion replaces power, curiosity replaces fear, and community works together. 🤝![]()
Fromm reminds us that the strength of any society lies in how it nurtures the well-being, creativity, and freedom of all its members. 🌱![]()
Let’s keep working toward a Malta that embodies these values — where reason, empathy, and solidarity guide our choices, and where every individual can truly flourish. 🇲🇹✨![]()
This is Humanism. ❤️![]()

📰 An important step forward for Personal Autonomy in Malta![]()
Parliament’s unanimous approval of Living Wills legislation is a significant milestone for dignity, informed choice, and end-of-life decision-making in Malta. The new law allows people to formally record advance medical directives so their wishes remain respected if they can no longer communicate them.![]()
For Humanists Malta, this is a meaningful step because it gives practical effect to personal autonomy. It helps ensure that a person’s wishes about their own body and medical care are respected, while also offering important clarity and reassurance for families and healthcare professionals. It is especially encouraging to see progress on proposals which we were the first put forward, in 2022, reflecting the kind of humane, dignity-centred society we believe Malta should continue to build. ![]()
We welcome this progress toward a Malta built on dignity, compassion, and respect. 🤝🇲🇹![]()
