🗳️ A referendum on voluntary assisted euthanasia would give the Maltese public the opportunity to engage directly with one of the most profound and personal ethical issues of our time.At Humanists Malta, we believe these conversations should be approached with empathy, dignity, and respect for differing views. Discussions on end-of-life choice are not simply political debates — they are deeply human questions involving suffering, autonomy, compassion, and personal dignity. 🤝For some people facing terminal illness and unbearable suffering, having the option of voluntary assisted euthanasia can offer peace of mind, comfort, and a sense of control during the final stages of life. No person should be forced to endure unnecessary suffering against their wishes when safeguards, informed consent, and strict medical oversight are in place. 🕊️We support open, evidence-based dialogue that allows people to make informed decisions while listening respectfully to the experiences and perspectives of others. Beyond consent, the inclusion of a medical professional who directly administers the life-ending medication is also a vital part of VAE.An option reserved for some very divisive topics, referendums have been held only seven times in Malta’s history. Most recently 11 years ago back in 2015, the country voted on the repealing of a spring hunting season for turtle doves and quail. At times life can be very fast-paced and overwhelming; having to juggle a number of commitments, relationships and deadlines. This rush that takes us through life, albeit useful, might also distract us from stopping and reflecting on the meaning of our life. What is our purpose? What would we like to achieve? What would we wish to stop replicating and how can we change our narrative?<br />By taking a Humanistic and Existential stance, we can reflect on our potential and also acknowledge our background. What are the opportunities that we would like to engage in and what are the resources that we need to achieve this? What are the obstacles that are limiting us?<br />During our meeting, we will take some time to stop, reflect and discuss how we can create meaning in a seemingly meaningless word.<br /><br />About the speaker:<br />Abigail Church has obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology (Hons) from the University of Malta. Following this she continued furthering her studies at a Postgraduate level with CPPD School, London, in Humanistic Integrative Counselling. Further training in the field of Counselling was pursued through a Masters in Counselling Children and Young People at the University of South Wales. These qualifications made it possible for Abigail to achieve her full warrant in counselling and equipped her to be able to work therapeutically not only with adults, but also with children and teenagers. Apart from her professional background Abigail has vast experience working in different settings: as a Learning Interventionist by supporting children and parents with regards to specific learning difficulties; as a Counsellor in state schools and within the school psychological services; as a Childcare Centre Coordinator and more recently as a Counsellor through Private Practice with the Willingness Team.
